Jeff Masters

Jeff Masters is a meteorologist and co-founder of Weather Underground. Masters wrote much of the software that ingests and formats the raw National Weather Service data used on the website. He flew with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters from 1986-1990. After nearly getting killed flying into Hurricane Hugo, Jeff left the Hurricane Hunters pursue his Ph.D. at Michigan in air pollution meteorology. He joins us to discuss hurricane Gustav and the possible consequences for the levees in New Orleans. Masters lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Greg Palast

Greg Palast is an investigative journalist and author, whose books include Armed Madhouse and The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. Palast joins us to discuss his latest work, Steal Back Your Vote, a project for which he has collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Palast is best known as the journalist who, for the Observer (UK), broke the story of how Jeb Bush purged thousands of black citizens from Florida voter rolls before the 2000 presidential election, thereby handing the White House to his brother George. Sally Castleman

Sally Castleman is an activist and national chairperson of Election Defense Alliance. Castleman will follow Greg Palast’s segment, and talk with us about the gravest threats to election integrity in the United States. She’ll also have some advice about what people can do to restore that integrity. Castleman is also a grassroots coordinator for the new film by Dorothy Fadiman, Stealing America: Vote by Vote. The film premiered August 1st in NY and is currently touring the country. The film is available on DVD.

Ellie Smeal

Ellie Smeal is president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, which publishes Ms. Magazine, and is a long-time national feminist leader. She has been elected president of NOW three times, beginning in 1977. Smeal was at the Democratic National Convention this week, and we’ll talk about her impressions there. We’ll ask her whether the refrain about “disgruntled Hillary supporters” was true. We’ll also take a look at John McCain’s vice presidential pick, Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska.
We also remember Del Martin, who died at the age of 87 this week. Del was a pioneer of both the lesbian rights movement and the movement to protect women from domestic violence.

Michael Shoob

Michael Shoob is a film maker known for his his 2004 documentary, Bush’s Brain, whose subject was Karl Rove and the political tactics he used to propel George W. Bush to the White House. Shoob joins us to discuss Rove’s increasing involvement with John McCain’s presidential campaign. Rove is currently a paid commentator for Fox News, and recently has been found in contempt of Congress. Later this year Michael Shoob will release First Comes Love, a film featuring Kathy Bates and Henry Winkler.

Stephen Zunes

Dr. Stephen Zunes is a Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco, where he chairs the program in Middle Eastern Studies. A native of North Carolina, Professor Zunes received his PhD. from Cornell University, his M.A. from Temple University and his B.A. from Oberlin College. Professor Zunes is the author of scores of articles for scholarly and general readership on Middle Eastern politics, U.S. foreign policy, international terrorism, nuclear nonproliferation, strategic nonviolent action, and human rights. Dr. Zunes has made frequent visits to the Middle East and other conflict regions, where he has met with top government officials, academics, journalists and opposition leaders. Tyson Slocum

Tyson Slocum is the Director of the Public Citizen Energy Program. Slocum joins us to speak about the record-breaking $11.68 billion second quarter profits of the ExxonMobil corporation. Our topics will also cover off-shore drilling and whether it will help American tax-payers and consumers.
Slocum joined the Public Citizen Energy Program in 2000 where he promotes stronger regulation of energy markets, examines the impact of mergers and lax regulations over electricity, petroleum and natural gas, and monitors federal energy legislation. Tyson also researches the influence of corporate special interests on our political system and works to promote corporate and government accountability. He is the author of numerous reports on these subjects, presenting his findings in testimony before the U.S. Congress. He appears regularly in radio, print, and television media. Prior to Public Citizen, Tyson was a policy analyst at Citizens for Tax Justice. He received his B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and grew up in Rhode Island.
